  1. RHIALTO THE MARVELLOUS, DJ - This picture is a close-up of a portion of an acrylic painting on a canvas board size 14 x 18. It appears on the front of the dust jacket for the book, "RHIALTO THE MARVELLOUS," by Jack Vance, published by Underwood-Miller, 1984.

Something very unique happened regarding the written works of Jack Vance. A few of his admirers, a small group of science fiction-Jack Vance fans who enjoyed and appreciated his stories were concerned that his work was not being treated with the respect it deserved by the publishing industry; his stories were often published in small scattered editions in which the editors made senseless changes to the text so that Vance sometimes denounced authorship of the stories. So these Jack Vance fans decided to do something about it . . .

In 1999, using the internet, this small group of fans appealed to other Jack Vance fans around the world to help organize a program whose goal was to publish a complete uniform set of enduring hardcover books that would be faithful to the works of Jack Vance. The program is referred to as "VIE" -the VANCE INTEGRAL EDITION. The cost of production would be paid for by subscribers to the set.

Over 300 volunteers, none were ever paid for their work on the project, were organized into groups, with group managers and directors and they set out to obtain and check into every story Vance wrote, comparing the published editions to the original manuscripts, and under the aegis of Jack Vance every story was restored to Vance's version.

The project was completed in 2006. After 6 years of cordinated effort they produced 600 sets of 44 books, and a supplementary 45th volume of stories that Vance wrote under the pen name, Ellery Queen. They also produced several dozen sets that they donated to libraries. An amazing effort by some truly amazing fans.
